Can .NET make PHP run faster than the official PHP implementation?
Phalanger is compiler that generates .NET assemblies from PHP code, so it runs in a .NET virtual machine. The latest benchmarks seem to indicate that PHP applications compiled by Phalanger execute noticeably faster than when they are executed by the official PHP implementation based on Zend engine, even when a caching extension is used. Read this article to learn how Phalanger works and what lessons can be learned to make the official PHP implementation run at least as fast, eventually in PHP 6 based on Zend Engine 3.

Practical PHP Refactoring: Encapsulate Downcast (and Wrapping)
You'll never need to downcast objects: variables can contain handlers to objects or even scalars without compile-time checks. Casting with (ClassName) is not even supported by the language (while casting a non-object with (object) will give you a stdClass.) Downcasting however means to promote a variable from a stricter interface to a richer one: we will apply this refactoring to scalars and their OO equivalents, Value Objects.

Rails from the point of view of a PHP developer
Back in the day I tried Ruby on Rails for web development, but got turned off by the heavy dependence on Active Record and code generation. Using empty models which generated all of their fields from the database was not really a clean solution for me. I had also a more closed mindset, but after trying out many new programming languages and having seen the presentation Java viene da Marte, Ruby da Venere (Java comes from Mars, Ruby from Venus) by Paolo Perrotta I'm ready to try again.

One of my main concerns with PHP has been the lack of ecosystem. Almost all libraries and tools are written with a specific framework in mind, creating separate ecosystems around Drupal, Zend Framework, Midgard and others instead of an ecosystem benefiting all users of the language.

PHP OOP question about program design.
submitted by oblogic7I am working on my first project using object oriented PHP. I have the program functioning the way I would like. However, I have a question about best practices for a particular function.
Currently, when a request is made to a specific URL a new instance of a "parser" class is created. The sole purpose of this class is to read the contents of a file and parse the data into new instances of other classes in the project. Once the other objects have been created, the parser object is no longer needed.
My question is whether or not the "parser" actually needs to be a class or if there is a better way to initialize the data for my application to use.
I am also wondering whether or not this class should use the singleton pattern so that multiple requests to the URL do not create several instances of the parser.

Is anyone using a text expander to generate code?
submitted by cybersphere9I've started to play around with Phrase Express, which watches what you are typing and expands out any defined abbreviation. There are a multitude of applications for this, including spelling auto-correction, insertion of boilerplate text, etc. I've adapted the technique to generate HTML and PHP code. Are you using a similar technique? What tools do you use to accomplish text expansion/code generation?

Curious: How "far" do you code the variables in your views?
submitted by hiiiTerribly worded title, but i can't think of a better way to word it.
I never code my view variables down to the exact outputted variable. I'm wondering how far people code their variables down to.
I don't know how to word my question but lets give an example. Say you were to inherit some code that outputs pagination. Would you be ok with seeing:
<?php foreach( $registry->page_array as $page_number ): ?> <li<?php if( $registry->page_number == $page_number ): ?> class="active"<?php endif; ?>><a href="<?php e( sprintf( '%s/%s/page/%s/%s', URL_ROOT, $registry->controller, $page_number, $registry->query ) ) ?>" class="page"><?php e( $page_number ) ?></a></li> <?php endforeach; ?>In my controller I could've coded an array that had the page number and page link for each page. But i leave it as an array of page numbers and output the rest in my view.
Do you code you view variables down to the state they will be used in or do you leave some basic processing like this for your view?

What is the best place to generate reports?
submitted by ProdigyViewRecently I converted a MongoDB database into SQL for reporting. It is a lot easier to run reports when you have joins.
Now the question is where is the best place to generate results for reports? Ideally there are three places
- Database Server (SQL)
- PHP Server
- Javascript/Client's Browser
I came up with those three places because the client makes a request for the report to be generated. The request goes to a backend server that makes a request to mysql. The mysql results are then converted into JSon and then returned to the user.
I am leaning towards the client/javascript because I can foresee a bottleneck occurring in other places. So what is the best place to sort the results into meaningful data? Thoughts?

Who uses short tags, and why?
submitted by paranoidelephpantOkay, so this is almost purely a matter of opinion, but who here uses short tags? Why or why not? If your organization has coding standards, what do they say about them?
I know there are a lot of opinions floating around the internets, and I've seen a lot of the pro/con arguments. My personal coding style avoids them, but mostly because in the past I've worked on projects where portability was key. I find the short "<?" opening to be ugly as hell (stupid reason, maybe, but it grates on me), but I don't mind the short echo syntax of "<?=". Other than portability or interweaving xml and php, are there any reasons not to use short tags?
tl;dr: I guess what I'm asking is, should I step back and re-evaluate my prejudice against php's short tags?
Edit: It sounds like most of you have the same ideas I do regarding short tags: I avoid them, but I don't have a problem with the echo shorthand ("<?=$var ?>") in view scripts. Thanks for everybody's input! Based on feedback here, I think I'll try to amend my team's coding standards to allow the echo shorthand in views. I can see where it would make things a little cleaner (we already use alt syntax for this purpose).

Need a little help parsing, or rather formating, an RSS feed with SimplePie.

Second, I'm able to return the data I need alright.
Now, I'm trying to format some of that data. I've defined a custom class for a particular namespace and I'm returning this date and start time,
Mon, 19 Dec 2011 20:57:14 -0600
using, <p><?php echo $item->get_end_datetime(); ?></p>
coming from, $data = $this->get_item_tags(SIMPLE_NAMESPACE_PSG, 'end_datetime'); return $data[0]['data'];
I'm just confused on how to format it to something like, Dec. 19 | 8:57pm
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Need PHP programming help (simple or paid)
submitted by noblertosufferI program in C++ and HTML, but I know next to nothing about PHP. Normally I'd just learn by hitting "view source" on every webpage I see, but PHP is inaccessible because, as I understand it, it's server-side and isn't even sent to my computer.
Essentially, I want to write a webpage similar to this, in that it will contain text, annotations, categories, etc. The crux is that it must be fragmented into verses that can be associated with other text (an annotation) and separated into categories (for automated "display this category" functionality). Naturally, I can't use HTML for this because it would require a lot of extra work and would be completely inflexible; I'd need to create a distinct page for every single possibility and thus if I wanted to change the formatting it would take weeks.
tl;dr: I need to know how to...
include a page of text on each of hundreds of such webpages
occasionally include an annotation alongside a single paragraph in this text
associate any given paragraph with a category (ideally, I could use more than one category if needed)
let the user click "category X" and display all paragraphs marked as X within the section they're viewing (i.e. could be an entire play, an act, or a chapter)
Please suggest how this can be most efficiently done. I'm a fast learner, so don't worry about being too explicit; even naming the concept I'd need to research would be helpful. If I'm severely underestimating this complexity, I'm willing to pay someone to write it for me. Bear in mind that I'm a college student, not a corporate fat cat.
Note: I've already written almost all of the content I'll be using, but naturally want the ability to adjust it whenever I'd like. I only need to know what code I'll need to put where and how to structure the content to facilitate the use of PHP.
Thanks!

Question about Manipulating Other Users' PHP Sessions
submitted by nrogers64Here is a crude way to manipulate other users' PHP sessions:
Why manipulate other users' PHP sessions? You could remotely log other users out or remotely log yourself out (whether by completely deleting the session or just modifying it). You could also make it so that when an admin downgrades a user's permissions, that downgrade takes effect immediately instead of upon the user's next login. For instance, let's say that in the footer of every page on your site, there is a "Create New User" link. Then an admin changes your permissions. Now the link will no longer be in the footer.
My question is what is the correct way to do this? As mentioned, the method linked to above is crude. Thanks!

Real World vs Classroom situations.
submitted by SneakyFloorMopGreetings,
Lately, coming to the end of my 3rd semester of classes (2nd year) of school, I find myself more and more worried about finding programming work, albeit I do have another year left, I have a few concerns that I have brought up with my classmates/teachers, and nobody else seems as worried as me.
A little backstory, I graduated at 21 from this same college with a diploma in Network Engineering, and I was quite successful for 5 years in the industry, becoming a team lead and eventually management. I decided to go back to school because I just did not feel like that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and I found myself either at a point where I would move for work or stay and get some more schooling. I have no real life commitments except bills so I said fuck it and went for it.
Now here I am in school, second year, taking C#, JS, and PHP. Next semester we are slated to start ASP. Of all these languages, I have very much fallen in love with PHP, I like it's flexibility, I like how it works on many different levels as front end or backend, I just love how it feels, it seems to flow naturally to me, where I struggle with C# and grasping concepts and all the background work the IDE does for me, I can see exactly what I am doing in PHP. Now before I propose to this language so to speak, I had some questions.
Now I know that you never fully commit to one language, that's just stupid (and I cannot admit I haven't been interested in RoR, because I think it is a great language from what i've seen.) but regardless, how do you know if you are ready for real world work? It just feels like all of these little finance apps we build, a mortgage calculator, etc.., the only stuff that has felt of value is building connections to databases and pulling/pushing data into them and stuff like that. From a designer point of view even, I feel like I am not ready, I can do the data modeling it seems but front end design looks terrible (although functionality is there).
I guess I am just looking to some of you more senior developers what you would expect someone like me, fresh out of school, to be able to do. What are some of the day to day tasks you would assign me? (This is assuming I want to be there and want to learn more, not just collect a cheque)
Also, what salary/compensation could someone like me expect, obviously I know I wouldn't get my previous salary right out of school.
Thanks guys

Optimising a PHP site with KCacheGrind and XDebug
submitted by WishCowI'm not sure if linking a blog post by yourself is okay, the faq says not to frequently link to your own content, I hope you let this one slip by.
I just started my own blog (deployed an hour ago), and an article that you might be interested in is Optimising a PHP site with KCacheGrind and XDebug.
I'm open to any kind of feedback.
